Refurbishment 2015-2018. Architects: ostertag ARCHITECTS , Vienna
The former Dorotheum auction house, a listed building, located in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (Vienna’s 15th municipal district) that underwent general refurbishment from 2015 to 2018 houses 12 different office spaces, an art depot and a restaurant.
In 2019, the project was awarded the State Prize for Architecture and Sustainability and the City of Vienna Urban Renewal Prize for the mindful and authentic refurbishment with special attention to energy efficiency and durability.

Modular timber construction for a climate-friendly addition of storeys and redensification.
At the highest point of Felberstrasse, the one-of-a-kind “Paradiesvogel” (Bird of Paradise) project is currently being built. This two-storey roof superstructure involves the skillful combination of massive timber elements and visible steel constructions. Using wide-span kielsteg roof elements, new spatial standards for urban timber construction are set. Expanse, a wide view, and ample space are being guaranteed. At the same time, the building is undergoing refurbishment from top to bottom to live up to current demands. Accordingly, a new elevator and a barrier-free ramp are being built in.

The hermetic internal structure of the former customs office building is being opened up to allow for a tangible experience. Parts that are superfluous in terms of structure and space are removed and new indoor situations are being created. This allows for generous interior width that is commensurate with the type of use and ensures a high amenity value.

The joint project “Gleis 21” sets the course for the dream of a “different” kind of housing and brings a village feel to the city. In addition to individual housing units, a versatile cultural space is being created that constitutes an agora for the new neighborhood.

MIO is a versatile neighborhood center combining living and working. A facilitated Urban Upgrade process provides a myriad of possibilities for co-determination and creates synergies between the tradespeople that are going to move into the center.
The Urban Upgrade process idea is to combine the utilization of ground floor zones, Urban Manufacturing, and tenant participation in a new neighborhood center located in Vienna’s Sonnwendviertel. Urban Upgrade constitutes a special service for start-ups, small businesses, one-person businesses, SME…, interested in the commercial spaces in the Quartiershaus MIO neighborhood center. A special kind of business community is being developed in the emerging and burgeoning Sonnwendviertel-Ost neighborhood in Vienna. Entirely in line with the motto “Small fish, big nets”, a vibrant business community and a varied offer are to be created here for the Sonnwendviertel neighborhood and for the entire municipal district of Favoriten. The experiences gathered in the course of this pioneering project are to be turned into a transferable process that can also be used for follow-up projects, i.e. an “Urban Upgrade” suitable for various requirements and locations! The project is subsidized by Wirtschaftsagentur Wien , the Vienna Business Agency.
